Get her body: Learn Jennifer Aniston's yoga workout

turn to Mandy... just like jen does!

Jennifer Aniston’s toned arms and rock-hard abs have been a topic of constant conversation for years. Now, with the help of Jen’s fabulous ‘Yogalosophy’ instructor Mandy Ingber, you too can get the bod!

Mandy Ingber has been on the Hollywood hot-body circuit for a while now. For more than 16 years she taught sold-out yoga and spinning classes all over Los Angeles, while privately tutoring some of Tinseltown’s top actresses.

From Jennifer Aniston to Kate Beckinsale, tons of A-listers trust their money-making physiques to Ingber. Jennifer Aniston loves Ingber’s method so much that she actually filmed the intro to Ingber’s DVD.

Though Ingber is now working solely in the private sector, she tells SheKnows the secret to celebrity success it pretty simple. With just an hour a day, three to five days a week, you too can get a body like Jen's. Ingber hooked up with us at Up Dog Yoga and Cycling in West Hollywood recently to show us how.

Watch: Five "Yogalosophy" poses

Mandy Ingber interview

Jennifer Aniston's friend and trainer, Mandy Ingber, shows you how to Jen's rockin bod.

So, what is yogalosophy?

"I coined the word because I wanted to bring the intention setting from yoga into pretty much any [other] workout," Ingber explains to SheKnows. In short, it's about blending a yoga pose with a toning exercise to get the maximum benefit.

Jen's fave pose

"It's tree pose! She really likes the balancing poses."

Ingber stressed the importance of connecting internally and finding a still point while doing any exercise. For example, she views spinning as a very meditative, repetitive exercise.

Be mindful of your breath during slow yogi movements and during fast-paced workouts like spin class and you'll see how they balance each other out, Ingber says.

Q&A

yoga playlist please?

  1. "Floating" by Katherine Liner
  2. "Double Rainbow" by Maetar
  3. "Spiritual High Part 3" by Moodswings
  4. "If 6 Was 9" by Axiom Funk
  5. "Time Will Tell" by Bob Marley

How to create a vision mat

It’s easy to see why Mandy is so popular. Her inspirational messages really keep clients motivated. Ingber came up with the concept of the visionmat, an individually created yoga mat with photos and quotes to help clients reach their goals.

“They can have it so that they can see their dreams while they’re exercising,” says Ingber. “I like to have nature, so I have mountains or sky or the ocean, but also things like healthy foods and places I want to travel to. And of course, I write things down, like what I’d like to achieve in my career. Being on SheKnows.com was on my vision board last year.”

So it looks like the visionmat works! Now all we need to do is put a picture of Jennifer Aniston’s abs on our mat; that should do the trick, right?

 3 Mistakes new yogis make

1. Thinking that going deeper is better: Forcing yourself into a pose is not the solution. It's better to back off and stay focused on your alignment.

2. Wearing socks: Don't do it; it's too slippery!

3. Comparing yourself to another person: We all have different body types and histories. A 5'2" girl will look different in a pose than a 6' male body builder.

A special thanks to ...

4 Tips to make yoga affordable

1. A DVD like Yogalosophy . Ingber also suggests downloads from her store and practicing from a book.

2. Join an online community that you can use monthly.

3. Yoga at your gym can be just as great as a with a private instructor. Let the teacher know you're new.

4. Do your research. Many yoga studios have community classes or donation-based classes.

Running: The new "it" workout

On Sunday April 15, More and Fitness magazines hosted their annual half-marathon in New York's Central Park, the largest women’s-only half in the country. The View's Elisabeth Hasselbeck returned for her second year, running as the celebrity host of the fitness-focused event.

She’s not the only famous face to pound the pavement, especially in recent years. Celebrities of all kinds seem to be embracing running as their calorie-burning activity of choice.

Celebrity running fever

Hasselbeck isn’t alone when it comes to stars who don sneakers. From Katie Holmes and Christy Turlington to Reese Witherspoon and Renee Zellweger, the number of celebs who run to stay in red-carpet shape continues to grow. They might have access to the best gyms and trainers in the world, but stars lately are trading fancy fitness equipment for a good pair of running shoes.

The 'it' way to move your body

Last year, Hasselbeck finished the half-marathon in Central Park in a speedy 1:42:33. In addition to the veteran View host, more than 10,000 women, including two elite runners also participated in Sunday's event. "Running has taken off for everyone, not just celebrities," says Betty Wong, editor-in-chief of Fitness. "It’s an easy do-anywhere workout that is practically equipment-free. You just need a good pair of sneakers and away you go," she adds.

Says More editor-in-chief Lesley Jane Seymour about the race: "The More/Fitness women's half-marathon is a powerful event that not only celebrates health and wellness, but the incredible spirit of the thousands of women who come from all over the world to reach a goal — to get out there and get moving, and to have a blast doing it."

Getting started

It’s true — there isn’t much that goes into getting started when it comes to running. If you’re not sure where to start , fear not. There are several apps that can help get you ready to run. We like Couch-to-5K for its simplicity and effectiveness. We know more than a few run-phobic friends who were pleasantly surprised at how this app helped make running accessible to them.

Other benefits of running

"Donning a shiny medal afterward is like earning our very own Oscar, Emmy or Golden Globe."

In addition to being cost-effective and a great way to stay in shape, preparing for and competing in a race in particular can allow you to get even more bang for your fitness buck, Wong says. "Entering a race is a great way to set a goal for yourself and apply all your workouts toward training for the big day. That feeling of accomplishment you get crossing the finish line is addictive, no matter how fast your time," she explains. Just how good does it feel to finish that race? "Donning a shiny medal afterward is like earning our very own Oscar, Emmy or Golden Globe – not to mention all that training we put in means we’ve got strong, sexy legs to show for it, too!"

Richard Simmons' new life as Dickie Jukebox

Richard Simmons may be about to celebrate birthday number 64, but age most certainly is not slowing this fitness guru down! Allow us to introduce you to the man now known as "Dickie Jukebox."

Richard Simmons

Richard Simmons is making 63 years old look fabulous. The man infamously known for high energy and short shorts recently spoke to Men's Health magazine about his trademark attire, his impressive doll collection and what his new nickname is all about.

These days the public can find Richard Simmons sweating it out at his own gym, Slimmons. For a full hour and 25 minutes the once obese fitness guru shakes in his infamous shorts and encourages others to do the same.

Sadly, Simmons, who is seen here at a Dance to Conquer Cancer event in February, is in danger of running out of shorts! "They don't make Dolfin shorts anymore," he said, breaking the shocking news to the magazine. "It's true! I'm not lying. They're from 1979, and they don't make them anymore because the material is flammable. Literally flammable! They're not allowed in the United States anymore."

Never fear, though. The curly-haired motivator is prepared. "I've got 400 pairs," Richard Simmons said reassuringly.

"People write to me all the time and say, 'Dear Richard, I was cleaning out my garage and you're just never going to guess what I found. I've got two pair of Dolfin shorts!' And they send them to me… I'm going to donate all of my clothing to the Smithsonian after I die, because I want my own wing. I don't want just, like, a Fonzie jacket. I want the Richard Simmons wing."

Richard Simmons is not ill, he's in the best shape of his life! >>

What's not quite as clear, however, is what will happen to Richard Simmons' staggering doll collection down the road. "I have a one-of-a-kind collection of dolls," he confessed. "My house is like a museum… But I have at least 400 dolls in my house at all times, and then I switch them out. We all collect something. Your mother could’ve collected salt and pepper shakers. It’s fun when you’re younger, but then we get to our 60s and think, 'What am I doing with all this stuff?'"

As for retiring? Richard Simmons told Men's Health don't bet on it. "Oh no, I couldn't do that," he insisted at the suggestion. "I wouldn't be able to sit still. If I have to die, I want to combust in the middle of one of my classes."

Here's hoping there are many more years of short-shorts — without any combustion — ahead for Richard Simmons!

Malin Akerman talks "tonguiest kiss" with Tom Cruise

Actress Malin Akerman has a hot body -- and she knows it! She's not the typical actress that only credits her body to good genes: She works for it! Find out her tips -- and what it was like to make out with Tom Cruise.

Malin Akerman talks Tom Cruise in ShapeIt's safe to say that Malin Akerman is on the express train to superstardom. The 34-year-old Swedish actress is starring in a ton of movies this year, including the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages. She's a great actress and all, but we're more interested in how she keeps that rockin' bod.

Luckily, she's telling us how in the new issue of Shape.

"I'm not going to lie: I was born with good genes [her mother was also a model]. But when I overindulge, I can get a paunch in my belly. And I've always wished I had more beef in my booty," she told the magazine However, she keeps it real when it comes to nutrition and exercise.

"I've never been on a fad diet or tried one of those crazy cleanses. I think they just mess up your system. I believe in eating as nutritiously as I can all the time -- not just before I'm putting on a swimsuit. My mother raised me on fresh rather than processed foods, and that's how I eat on a regular basis," she said, adding that she does splurge as much as anyone else. "I have my splurges. I can't live without chocolate. Though I barely consider it an indulgence because it's good for you. I also love a thick steak and French fries. I try not to eat them more than once a week, but if they somehow land on the table in front of me, I won't hold back. You've got to allow yourself the things you enjoy or you'll just be miserable."

As for exercise, Akerman said she's a yoga enthusiast who'd rather stay close to home instead of at a sweaty gym.

"I prefer exercising in or near my home. I usually start my day doing some yoga poses and then go for a 45-minute hike in the park nearby. It's hard to be consistent because of my schedule. There are days I only have time to do a few sets of crunches and push-ups in my living room or 10 minutes of jumping jacks. But no matter what, I try to do something each day."

Akerman also gets the distinct pleasure of kissing Tom Cruise's aging rocker character in Rock of Ages. Thandie Newton famously complained of kissing Cruise when they filmed the first Mission: Impossible sequel, but Akerman gives him nothing but praise for his tonguing skills.

"The script called for the tonguiest tongue kiss of all time. And we were like, 'Let's go for it.' It was hilarious," she joked. "Working with Tom was a dream come true. I can die happy now."

Celebrity-inspired Fitness

Ever wonder how your favorite celebs stay fit? Us, too! That’s why we decided to look into some of the go-to workouts that keep those famous bodies in shape. Trust us -- you won’t be bored after testing out a few of these fun, star-approved workouts.

We turned to Ilyse Baker, celebrity fitness trainer and top 10 FitOrbit.com trainer, to let us in on how celebs are staying fit.

Dance

Stars like Brooke Burke, Jennifer Grey, Jennifer Lopez, Julianne Hough, Pink, Vanessa Williams, Eva Longoria and many more stay fit through dancing. “Dance strengthens your body, builds stamina and balance, is great for the brain, requires no equipment and is easy to do in the comfort of your own home,” says Baker. It’s even more popular now due to all of the reality dance TV shows where we see celebrity bodies transform overnight. Dance also has the benefits of being fun, exciting and a great stress reliever. “Just like you and me, celebs get bored of the same old workouts, so they choose dance to literally shake things up, as it is an easy way to tighten and tone their bodies from head to toe,” the trainer explains. “You can burn anywhere from 300 to 600 calories dancing for 60 minutes.”

CrossFit

Madonna, Kelly Clarkson, Jessica Biel, Cameron Diaz and many more are big fans of CrossFit. It might seem like a new way to work out, but was actually created almost two decades ago. Why the comeback? “CrossFit has been gaining popularity in the past few years as the antidote to boring gym workouts,” Baker says. “The program is a time-saver; it's not about how long you exercise, but the intensity of your workout,” she explains. The workout incorporates weightlifting, kettlebells, plyometrics, cardio and more into bursts of high-intensity exercise. CrossFit also uses increasing intensity techniques to help increase strength and stamina. Due to the intense nature of the workout, expect results quickly, Baker tells us.

FitOrbit

Celeb gossip king Perez Hilton is a big fan of using FitOrbit, says Baker. FitOrbit.com is an online personal training service that matches clients with personal trainers who will customize a nutritional plan and exercise program for the client. Along with a diet and fitness plan, other resources on the FitOrbit site include a food journaling tool, exercise finder and progress tracker. “Your trainer will help you set goals and devise a workout plan completely customizable for you,” the trainer explains. “Perez agrees with FitOrbit that this program is not a quick fix, but instead it's a lifestyle change. You are taught properly how to lose weight and get the results you are looking for the right way. Your results will stay off and you will live a healthier way.” You can do FitOrbit at any time. You just need access to a computer.

P90X

It may seems like every celebrity has a personal trainer, but there are some celebs who work out with DVD programs just like we do. In fact, there are a number of stars who swear by P90X, a series of super-tough workouts on DVD designed by Tony Horton from Beach Body, says Baker. Celebs like Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore have credited P90X workouts for their fantastic bodies . Sheryl Crow has also had great results from doing P90X, she tells us. “Erin Andrews says that P90X keeps her lean and strong. Other celebs fans include Usher, Paul Ryan, Ray Allen, Joey Fatone and many more.”

If you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, P90X provides full body results, says Baker. “It features workouts from plyometrics to yoga. The system stresses the idea of ‘muscle confusion,' which basically means you're changing up your routine so much that you never plateau.”

Yoga

Get ready to stretch your way to a better body. Yoga is a great workout with many benefits. “It keeps your muscles flexible and strong and helps calm and relax your mind. Practicing yoga regularly is the secret to a healthy body and soul,” Baker says. Camilla Belle in particular is a big fan, she notes. “She likes the mix between the physical and meditating. It keeps her on track. She practices postures, breathing exercises and meditation to balance her mind and body. Yoga helps her tune out from her busy work schedule so she can relax and unwind.” Jennifer Aniston has an enviable body and that, too is partly because of her regular yoga workouts. “She practices about every other day, doing 45 minutes or so after she goes for a run. It's a great way to prevent tightness and clear your mind,” the trainer tells us.

Brooke’s No. 1 Diet Tip: Eat More!

Dancing with the Stars host Brooke Burke is super-busy, but between four kids and working full time, this mother and model still finds time to focus on health and fitness. Find out how she keeps her fabulous Celebody.

Whether it’s chasing around her four children, hitting up a cardio jam class with friends or simply popping in a quick workout DVD at home, Brooke Burke always makes time for fitness.

Take care of yourself

"You have to take care of yourself as much as you take care of your families," Brooke told SheKnows recently at the launch of Dreyer’s Light Slow Churned ice cream campaign, "A Reason to Smile," benefiting Operation Smile.

"The more you work out the more you crave it. I’m sort of addicted to that burn."

"The more you work out the more you crave it," Brooke told us. "I’m sort of addicted to that burn. I schedule it, just like I schedule stuff for my kids. I try to get it done in the morning when the kids are at school."

Stay active

The 40-year-old mom and Dancing with the Stars host lists her favorite activities as Pilates Plus, her own home workout DVDs and fitness classes with friends. She also takes advantage of the wonderful summer weather in Malibu and spends a lot of time outdoors with her hubby, Baywatch's David Charvet, and their kids.

"My family is really active," said Brooke. "We spend a lot of time on the trampoline, family barbecues -- they’re always swimming, we’re always on the go, just staying active and moving and enjoying family time outside."

Celebody - Healthy tips from Brooke Burke

Dancing with the Stars host Brooke Burke gives healthy tips for moms and their families.

Eat well

Eating well is also an important part of Brooke’s fitness regimen, and she gets the whole family in on making healthy choices as well.

"I try to make eating fun," Brooke told SheKnows. "I like to cook, so I invite [my kids] to shop with me. I invite them to engage in the kitchen with me. I’ll make little kiwi faces with oranges and apples. I think as a mom if you just take them time to be creative and put it in front of them, they’re going to eat one of the few things."

Brooke Burke's berry smoothie

Brooke’s healthy diet plan:

  • Breakfast: A protein shake with berries and coconut water
  • Lunch: A chopped salad with salmon
  • Dinner: A lean protein like fish and chicken
  • Snacks: "I love lemon water and green tea." Also: Slow Churned Light ice cream
Baboosh body

What’s in that gym bag?

  • Baboosh Body
  • Environmentally friendly water bottle
  • Extra shirt -- "I love to sweat!"
  • iPod
  • Phone
Sexy and I Know It

Brooke’s favorite songs to sweat to:

  • Sexy & I Know It – LMFAO
  • You & I – Lady Gaga
  • Don’t Cha – Pussy Cat Dolls
  • We Found Love – Rihanna
  • Dance Again – Jennifer Lopez
  • Just Can’t Get Enough – Black Eyed Peas

Brooke Burke eating ice cream

Be positive

Another thing Brooke makes sure to do with her kids is use positive words about eating healthy instead of focusing on the negative.

"I start to educate them really early on about healthy choices and I try not to use words like 'fat' and 'weight,' " said Brooke. "Especially as a mom with little girls, it’s a very sensitive subject matter."

But just like everyone else, Brooke has her splurges.

"Every once in a while I eat a margherita pizza, chocolate chip cookies or some ice cream," she revealed. "You just have to be conscious and find those right choices where you’re not always sacrificing. Then pick a day and cheat -- then get back on track."

Eat more

And though it may seem counter-intuitive, Brooke says the most important thing of all is really to just simply eat.

"Eat more when you want to lose weight," she told us. "Fad diets come and go. Never starve yourself or skip breakfast. Eat often and eat smart."

"Fad diets come and go. Never starve yourself or skip breakfast. Eat often and eat smart."

Top 11 fitness tricks for women

Achieving your dream physique doesn't mean slaving for hours in the gym. According to celebrity fitness guru Joel Harper, Dr. Oz's famed fitness expert and brand fitness expert for Promax, you can get the body of your dreams by doing the following high-rep body-weight exercises and putting his celebrity trainer tips to the test.

Top 11 exercises for women

"We are all really busy and don't have a lot of time," says Harper. "I am all for maximizing your results, but in order to do that you need to be efficient and work out properly. These 10 exercises turn your dream body into a reality."

1

Lying triceps press

Lie on your back with your knees bent and together, feet apart . Hold 2-pound dumbbells above your head and bring your elbows in line with your eyes. Bend your elbows, lowering the weights to the floor right above your head, then straighten your arms. Do 100 repetitions. Do not move your elbows the entire set.

Harper's tip: When this gets easy use a 3-lb. dumbbell,, but never more weight. To make it harder increase the reps to 125.

2

Oblique kick

Come onto your left side with your legs stacked at a 90-degree angle. With your left forearm on the ground and your right hand in a fist for support on the ground, lift your body off the ground and kick your right foot out as high as you can, looking straight ahead the entire time. Come back to the starting position and repeat for 25 repetitions. Then switch sides.

Harper's tip: To make this exercise harder, take your right hand off the ground and put it on your waist. Now in the "up" position, the only thing that is touching the ground is your forearm and the side of your left foot.

3

X abs

Lie on your back and put your hands on your shoulders in an X behind your head, with your legs in butterfly position. Lift your upper body 25 repetitions using your abs. Then hold and lift your lower body 25 repetitions, tapping the sides of your feet back down. Then do both simultaneously. Keep your core engaged the entire time.

4

Butterfly taps

Sit up tall, knees bent and pointing out to the sides, feet on the floor in front of you with soles of your feet together. Place fingertips on the floor between your legs and lean back slightly until you feel your abs engage. Raise your left foot, then lower it and immediately raise your right foot. Continue, alternating your feet for 30 seconds. Then do both feet simultaneously for 30 seconds. Sit up straight and keep abs pulled in throughout movement.

5

Climber

Stand with feet hip-width apart and hands in front of shoulders, elbows pointing down and palms facing away from you. Raise your right arm overhead as you lift right knee toward chest. Repeat on opposite side. Continue, alternating sides, for 2 minutes.

6

Tricep cooker

Sit with your knees bent and feet on floor, hands 6 inches behind your hips and your fingers facing towards you. Lift your hips and raise your right leg straight up. Bend only your elbows, lowering your butt toward the floor. Straighten your arms and repeat 25 times, then switch legs. Do 2 sets with each leg.

Harper's tip: To make it easier, keep both feet on the floor.

7

Concentration lunges

With your hands on your waist, step your left foot forward. Drop your right knee down to the mat. Now check your form: Your front knee should be right over your ankle, and your back knee and shoulder are in alignment with the same hip. Keep this alignment for the entire set. Do 100 lunges, then switch sides.

Harper's tip: Pull your stomach in the entire exercise and stand up ballerina-straight.

8

Superman twist

Lie face-down with legs extended and forehead on hands, fingers interlaced. Raise legs and chest, then rotate torso to the left. Keeping legs raised, rotate to the right and repeat. Each set tap your elbow on the mat. Do 100 taps.

9

Donkey kicks

Get on all fours with your hands under shoulders and knees under hips. With slightly bent elbows and a straight line from the top of your head to your tailbone, lift your knees 1 inch off the ground and bounce them 1 inch up and down 50 repetitions. Once you are good and warm, float your feet off the ground and kick them in the air like a donkey. Do 50 repetitions.

Harper's tip: While you're performing the exercise, think "floating," not pounding back down. Imagine you are jumping on a sheet of glass and don't want to break it.

10

Stretch: Crisscross reach

Sit up tall with legs extended in front of you, left ankle crossed over right. Extend arms at shoulder height in front of you, left hand on top of right. Bend forward from hips, reaching right hand toward right toes as you lower your chin toward your chest. Focus on pressing your lower back toward your knees. Take five deep inhales, then repeat on the opposite side.

11

Wrestling circles

Lie on your back and lace your hands behind your head with your thumbs on your neck . While lifting your shoulders up, simultaneously lift your legs and rock using your obliques; twist for 10 repetitions clockwise, then switch directions for 10 repetitions.

Harper's tip: While you're doing this exercise, remember it's for your abs, not your neck. Engage your abs instead of just pulling up with your head. Also, keep your elbows out of your line of vision throughout.

Joel Harper's top 10 celebrity fitness secrets

Harper has more than just great moves to a fab physique. It takes more than just exercise to get and stay in shape. "I have the luxury of training some very successful people and the below insights are a common denominator," he says.

  1. After every exercise always stretch. It creates long lean muscles.
  2. There is always something new to learn. Never, ever get bored. If you are, it is your own fault.
  3. Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep. No excuses. This is crucial to glowing on the inside and out.
  4. Make sure you eat your daily amount of protein. Average daily protein needs = your body weight /2.2 x 1.5.
  5. Listen to your inner dialogue. What is going on in your head? Take responsibility for your thoughts. If you don't like them, change them.
  6. Your body is a choice you make. You are what you eat and how you exercise.
  7. Water!! Take your body weight and divide it in half: That's how many ounces to drink throughout the day. If you worked out for an hour, add another 10 ounces.
  8. If you are not hungry, don't eat. Your body is telling you something. I don't have 1 or 2 meals a week, because I listen to my body.
  9. Don't wear anything that you don't look incredible in. Period. No if ands or it cost $500. Donate it!
  10. Hang around happy, driven, successful people. You are an average of your top five best friends.

Is Kate Upton too fat?

$
0
0
Hayden Panettiere of Heroes fame, Harry Potter's Emma Watson, and even Dakota's little sis, actress Elle Fanning, have something in common with Kate Upton now: They've all been attacked for their weight by a community of bloggers who refuse to shrink into the background.

Kate Upton

"Kate Upton" went viral Wednesday morning, but it wasn't because of some sexy new spread or her self-involved comments.

It was because of comments made by a certain community of bloggers.

By way of Gothamist -- and so as not to send more traffic to the "thinspro" community in question -- the headline kicks off the hate by calling Upton "well-marbled," as if she's a side of beef.

"She looks thick, vulgar, almost pornographic -- and she is a solid 30 lbs too heavy for this outfit," the blogger proclaims, referring to photos of Kate in her usual tiny swimsuit.

One photo features her chowing down on a burger practically as big as her face.

"Huge thighs, NO waist, big fat floppy boobs, terrible body definition -- she looks like a squishy brick. Is this what American women are “striving” for now? The lazy, lardy look? Have we really gotten so fat in this country that Kate is the best we can aim for? Sorry, but: eww!" the writer continues.

It's not the first time the aforementioned hater has played the "I'm a victim game."

In defense of her hate-spewed, now-viral comments, she writes: "As a thin person, I was annoyed by our double-standards around weight. For example, people think nothing of telling a thin woman -- to their face, in front of an entire group of people -- how skinny they are and even to suggest what they should eat."

This writer, who remains "anonymous," has claimed, time and time again, that she is not "pro-anorexia."

Kate Upton

Yet, as Gothamist points out, her site continues to remain sprinkled with "thin tips," shared by her all-too-vast community of ultra-skinny worshippers who behave like cheerleaders, "Rah-rah'ing" their skinny-seeking sisters toward their radical weight goals.

While the blogger in question has removed her "Starving Tip of the Day" , the "tips" survive on in a cache.

Again, so as not to perpetuate too many ideas , but just to get a feel for how the definitely not pro-anorexia blogger writes: "When eating with others, cut your food up into really tiny pieces and move it around the plate. It makes it look like you ate a lot more than you really did.

Said like a true advocate for the "naturally" thin.

The Atlantic Wire, interestingly, has a completely different take from the supporters of said blogger and those who rush to defend the Sports Illustrated model.

It says that instead of coming to Kate's defense, we actually need to consider: Even Kate Upton, with her curves and her photos eating a hamburger, doesn't reflect the "average" woman: "To hold Kate Upton as some shining example of a 'real woman' is just putting our heads in the sand again.

"Some tiny percent of women look like either her or the hyper-skinny scary models that favorably," the writer contends. "Both types are alien creatures to the majority of women in the U.S. Still, perhaps more insidious than praising Upton for not looking like she has an eating disorder is heaping praise on magazines like Vogue and GQ for doing the truly audacious and putting a model who looks like she might occasionally eat something akin to a carb on their pages."

You’ve seen her gorgeous bod on Dancing With the Stars and Extra. Now Maria Menounos is showing it off on the cover of Shape and telling SheKnows how to get her results.

Maria’s bikini diet

Maria Menounos looks amazing in an orange and pink Lisa Blue bikini, showing off her sculpted abs as the cover girl of Shape’s July issue.

We caught up with the Extra host at her cover launch party at the ChapStick Beach House in Malibu this weekend to chat about her fitness secrets.

So what did Maria do to get in "Shape" for her big cover shoot?

"Nothing actually," she admitted. "I was in the heat of Dancing With the Stars so there was no time to do anything else."

Maria Menounos with Shape magazine coverStaying fit

Now that the show is over, Menounos tells us she’s staying fit with outdoor activities and trying to avoid the monotonous gym.

"Normally I keep in shape by playing some beach volleyball or basketball," Menounos told us. "I like things that are activity-based rather than gym-based. For me it’s all about being outside and having fun."

"I don’t really enjoy going to the gym," said Maria. "I don’t enjoy abs. Sit-ups stink."

She says she also does a lot of cardio and Pilates, but has had to take it easy lately while she recovers from her rigorous Dancing schedule. Over the course of the show, Menounos suffered injuries to her chin, ribs, and feet.

Maria Menounos and Derek HoughDiet and splurges

As for her diet, Maria enjoys grabbing lunch from L.A.’s Veggie Grill and the home delivery service, The Fresh Diet. But the host says, like everyone, she does have her splurges.

Menounos listed her favorite junk foods: "Potato skins, pizza, and ice cream."

"I love everything," she laughed.

"Potato skins, pizza, and ice cream. I love everything."

And if you’re guilty of splurging as well but need to be bikini-ready quick, Menounos has you covered.

Beach-body tips

San Tropez’s foam

Here are her quick tips for getting beach ready:

  1. If you don’t have a tan, do a little bronzer. She likes St. Tropez mousse and Jemma Kidd’s body glow.
  2. Drink a lot of water and avoid sodium.
  3. Try to eat as clean as you can, and avoid heavy meals.
  4. Hope for the best!

Obviously, Menounos has one of the best bodies in the business, but even she has her idols. When asked which celeb’s bikini bod she admires, Menounos told us, "Jessica Biel. She has a really gorgeous body. It’s tight and it's strong and it’s womanly."

Audrina Patridge flaunts large boobies in tiny bikini

Audrina Patridge might not have a television show right now, but she's still turning heads. Check out her latest bikini pictures, get jealous, and find out how she keeps her trim-and-toned body.

Audrina Patridge in her bikini

Audrina Patridge hasn't been on television much lately, probably because she's too busy spending time in her bikini! The former Dancing with the Stars contestant and star of The Hills looked incredible as she hosted Liquid Sundays at Foxwoods Resort Casino on July 22.

"Sipping on Crown Royal and munching on fruit, Patridge was her usual friendly self, signing autographs, posing for pictures and dancing with fans," a spy told SheKnows of Patridge's party pastimes.

That's all well and good, but we want to know how she gets her sick body. We have a sinking feeling that a lot of it is genetics, but she does admit to working out and watching her diet.

"I don't even think twice about wearing a swimsuit because it's always been a part of my lifestyle," she told Shape in 2011, "but I have girlfriends who are so afraid to show their bodies. They won't take off their towels at the beach or pool. It's a shame because everyone can look good in a suit."

So how can we look like you, Audrina?

"When I don't have time to go and work out or go to the gym or go to a Pilates class I have a jump rope and usually I try to jump rope as long as I can because it gets your heart rate up and you're working every muscle in your body," she told Shape of her workout routine. But what about those times — okay, most times — when we just don't want to work out?

"You should put pictures up for motivation and put it on your refrigerator and put it in the bathroom on your mirror so when you're getting ready you have something to motivate you and you say, 'Okay, I'm going.'"

As for eating, she likes fruit.

"My favorite quick and healthy eating tip would be to always have an apple with you because I've learned eating one apple is equivalent to a cup of coffee," she said. "If you eat healthy, you take care of yourself, you get your butt to the gym and wake up every morning, even if you don't want to, you're going to feel better on the inside as well as the outside."

And there you have it.

Celebrity weight loss tips for new moms

If you’ve ever wondered how celebrities like Jessica Alba seem to bounce right back into red-carpet shape after having a baby, there’s more to their transformation than just good genes. Celebrity trainer, author of Body After Baby and certified wellness coach Jackie Keller has helped countless celebrities lose the baby weight quickly and we asked her to share her secrets.
Jessica Alba -- Body after baby

Star-
powered slimdown

If you’ve ever wondered how celebrities like Jessica Alba seem to bounce right back into red-carpet shape after having a baby, there’s more to their transformation than just good genes.

Celebrity trainer, author of Body After Baby and certified wellness coach Jackie Keller has helped countless celebrities lose the baby weight quickly and we asked her to share her secrets.

When should you start?

You’re likely going to be tired, overwhelmed and short on time with a new baby, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start thinking about shedding weight slowly and when it works for you. “Listen to your body, but push yourself a little. Get started the right way,” says Keller. “New moms should start taking care of their nutrition needs immediately. There is no reason to hold onto excess weight, but every reason to eat healthfully,” she tells us. “For most women, the happy byproduct will be weight loss that is good for both mom and baby.”

Aside from Alba, Keller has worked with many star clients including, Uma Thurman, Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron and Penelope Cruz, just to name a few.

What should you eat?

While there likely won’t be time to make three-course meals to start with, do focus on making those ingredients healthy ones. “Stock up on high-fiber fruits and vegetables for antioxidants,” Keller advises. Getting back on track post-baby really is about upping your veggie intake, she insists. “Add more vegetables. You can't have too many.” Fruits and vegetables provide a whole host of vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay strong and boost your immune system. For a post-pregnancy kick-start, add apples, berries, citrus fruits, dark leafy greens , cruciferous veggies , asparagus and peppers to your grocery cart.

Keller also advises staying hydrated and adding healthy wild salmon for omega-3 fatty acids, heart-healthy oils and protein, low-fat or non-fat dairy for calcium, and whole grains for good digestive tract health, fullness and satiety.

note

Steer clear of anything refined, and butter, bacon and heavy meats if you want to drop the post-baby pounds.

Getting results

If you’ve had trouble losing weight after having a baby, you’re not alone. “Everyone's different. For some, the body holds the weight. For others it’s the opposite and the body is predisposed to weight loss in the first six months, which is the favorable hormonal situation,” explains Keller. But she says no matter the situation the key is to put constant effort into your weight loss goals. “Most people don't try hard enough.”

So what should you do? Start slow but get moving. “Walking is always good,” she advises. Begin with walking short distances and work up to longer and longer outings. Walking is easy and equipment-free, and you can do it with baby in tow.

In her book Body After Baby, Keller shares her ultimate post-baby body plan. “Every day has a movement/exercise and every 10 days there's a routine to follow,” she says.

  • Days one to 10: Keller knows the importance of having a very basic routine in the first several days with a newborn. Her book shares simple meals and gentle stretches she says get the body warmed up for weight loss.
  • Days 11 to 20: This section of the plan is all about fueling your body with superfoods that are going to aid weight loss and strengthen your body. You’ll also learn several exercises you can do anywhere, any time.
  • Day 21 to 30: Now you’re ready to improve performance with high-energy foods, all the better to help boost your workout. Keller provides simple but effective movements that strengthen your body and tone in just 30 minutes a day.

Staying motivated

When it comes to how celebrities seem to drop weight so quickly, it boils down to motivation. “They are simply more motivated that the rest of us as a whole. They get at it right away and work consistently toward it,” says Keller. Not everyone has the motivation of magazine covers and movie shoots to keep them on a post-baby fitness plan, but you can still find whatever helps you to keep moving. “Find what motivates you. As a coach, it's what I help people do. Maybe a picture of yourself at a weight you feel good about. Maybe an article of clothing you want to wear,” she suggests.

Working with moms

Keller loves working with moms to help them shed post-baby weight and finds it very inspiring. The fact she’s also a mom really helps. “Having been a mom myself, and having had two C-sections, and having lost my 25 pounds of baby weight twice in a matter of a month, I can totally relate to this population,” she says. When it comes to working with the Hollywood set, they make her job interesting. “Celebrity moms tend to be very motivated about getting back in shape, so they're a pleasure to work with.”

Tebow’s healthy diet & exercise routine

Professional athletes like Tim Tebow have to be in top shape at all times. SheKnows found out just what it takes to be a star quarterback when we went one-on-one with the football pro at the FRS Healthy Performance challenge.

When you watch pro athletes like Tim Tebow on television, you may wonder just what it takes to achieve the level of physical excellence required to play sports competitively. SheKnows had the privilege of working out with Tebow recently and sampling his diet at the FRS Healthy Performance challenge in Los Angeles.

Here’s what we learned:

1

It takes a team

Football players exercise as a team, and it’s that team spirit that keeps them going during strenuous workouts. During our session, we repeated one word frequently as a group for motivation: "Fearless!"

2

It’s not all about muscle

While having some serious guns is important, Tebow also practices speed and agility drills to keep him on his toes. Our trainer had us shuffling while twisting our hips back and forth to practice this. Not only is this good for the game, it’s a great cardio burn for non-athletes.

3

You have to hydrate

Tebow’s workout’s are long. While ours was only 45 minutes, Tebow usually spends 45 minutes on each drill during his workouts, so he has to stay hydrated. To do this, he drinks FRS Energy continuously throughout his sessions, giving him the hydration he needs and a boost of natural energy.

4

You have to fuel your body

Tebow eats super healthy! After our workout we were treated to a brunch of egg whites , fresh mixed fruit, oatmeal and whole wheat toast.

Tebow's diet

"Breakfast is really the most important meal of the day," he told us. "You want to be able to fuel yourself."

Although Tebow said that his whole diet is generally as healthy as his breakfast, the football star admits that he indulges on occasion. His favorite treats include ice cream, his mom’s cakes, and Honey Bunches of Oats.

"I let myself have frozen yogurt and go out to eat," says Tebow. "You have to really have balance."

One thing he eats that he does not enjoy is "green" smoothies.

"My nutritionist used to make one drink with one pound of spinach and it was really the most disgusting drink," says Tebow. "But it would make you feel so good the next day."

Tim Tebow and FRS

Free Radical Scavengers

The most important part of his fitness diet is the protein and energy Tebow gets from FRS.

FRS stands for Free Radical Scavengers and was originally developed by scientists to provide a natural, sustained source of energy for chemotherapy patients. It is now used by athletes worldwide like Tebow and Lance Armstrong to fuel their performance.

We tried their amazing instant energy shots pre-workout and can attest to the power surge it supplied mid-session. Tebow personally drinks the FRS concentrate.

Total Recall‘s Colin Farrell talks family and fitness

Colin Farrel in Total Recall

Colin’s pre-film workout routine

Colin Farrell has always been easy to look at, but the actor is even sexier in his role as an undercover agent gone rogue in Total Recall. The Irish hunk tells us what he did to shape up for the part.

Once known as a Hollywood "bad boy," Colin Farrell seems to have changed his ways, now opting to hit the gym instead of the club.

"Working out is something that I’ve learned to enjoy in the past couple of years," Farrell told SheKnows at the press day for his new flick, Total Recall. "I love it."

And his hard work is certainly paying off. Farrell looked as fit as ever playing secret agent stud "Hauser" in the remake of the 1990 classic, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"I had about four months [to train]. I went to the gym every day and I hit the bag," he told us. "I got really fast jogging. I was never a long distance runner but I got the mile down to a good time. I ate really well, slept loads, and kept sugar out of my diet."

And it seems Farrell is sticking to that regimen. The 36-year-old actor is repeatedly spotted taking classes at Hollywood’s hot spinning studio, Soul Cycle, and was drinking a "roots" juice during our interview from L.A.’s popular Pressed Juicery.

So what caused the change in his behavior? It seems family and friends are more important to Farrell these days than the Hollywood social scene.

"We are daily looking for meaning in our lives, looking for where you fit into the grand scheme of things," said Farrell.

Farrell said he finds meaning in his kids, relationships, and "fellow humanoids." Colin has two sons, 9-year-old James and 2-year old Henry.

Though his comments may seem oddly deep coming from an action hero, Farrell explains that the film isn’t just a "shoot em' up" flick.

"It was first and foremost a big action film, but there was plenty of existential questioning that I could afford myself as an actor, about the nature of personality and character and the relevance of history and background," said Farrell. "The whole story is about him looking to confirm to himself who he is."

Be sure to catch Colin Farrell in Total Recall, in theaters today!

Khloe Kardashian has faced criticism from the press about her weight. But the youngest Kardashian sister says she’s comfortable in her own skin, and she’s sharing her diet and fitness secrets with SheKnows.

Khloe’s diet and
fitness routine

On a bright and breezy afternoon in Beverly Hills, we met up with reality star Khloe Kardashian on the rooftop of Mr. C hotel to test out her new cocktail recipe.

"It's called The Dash," Khloe told us of her champagne and Hpnotiq Harmonie concoction. Khloe said she likes the cocktail because it's light and not too sugary, important factors for health-conscious celebs who are constantly in the spotlight.

Watch the interview:

Khloe Kardashian's Diet

Khloe Kardashian tells SheKnows about her diet and exercise routine. Says she's "more athletic" than her sisters!

Q&A

What’s Khloe's diet plan?

Breakfast: Steel cut oats or yogurt and berries
Lunch: Salad
Dinner: Lean protein and veggies.
Dessert/Snack: Champagne!

Healthy snacking

"I don't deprive myself if I want a glass of champagne," Khloe told SheKnows. "You have to enjoy being at a gathering. But I try to limit myself."

Khloe said she also makes sure to eat a healthy snack ahead of time so that she doesn't overindulge on passed appetizers at events.

"Before I go to events like this, I try to eat something healthy," said Khloe. "I always have snacks in my cars like almonds and dried fruits. I always have things handy or else you're going to be binging on things you shouldn't be, and feel guilty afterwards."

Fitness routine

The youngest Kardashian also stays fit by working out with her personal trainer, Gunnar Peterson.

"I do circuit training, five days a week," she told us. "And Pilates is good when you can't go to your trainer. You just feel lean and long."

Khloe KardashianWorking out with the Kardashians

Khloe also works out with her sisters Kim and Kourtney on occasion, as seen on Keeping up with the Kardashians. But Khloe tells us, she's definitely the most athletically inclined in the family.

"I think I'm the most athletic," Khloe told SheKnows. "Kourtney never works out and it's really annoying because she has such a good body. She does yoga like every blue moon. And Kim works out, but she goes in spurts. They have these amazing bodies and eat Oreos all day."

"I think I'm the most athletic."

Her sisters aren’t the only ones with sweet tooths though — Khloe's hubby Lamar Odom is also known for his sugary eating habits. Luckily for her though, Lamar is currently on a strict diet from his Los Angeles Clipper's nutritionist.

"They have him on a meal plan, so they send him home with breakfast, lunch, and dinner," she told us. "I'm like, 'Thank God.' He loves really heavy, hearty food. I cannot make mac and cheese and chicken, because of course you get tempted."

Body image

The most important factor in Khloe’s health routine, though, is staying positive about her body image.

"I'm not going to do anything drastic to fits anyone's mold," she told SheKnows. "You have to be confident in yourself, whatever size that is."

Second time mom and actress Ali Landry shares her tips to balancing motherhood, while still making “me time.”

Chocolate & girls night

Second time mom and actress Ali Landry shares her tips to balancing motherhood, while still making “me time.”

Model/actress Ali Landry gave birth to her second child, son Marcelo Alejandro, about nine months ago. Though many starlets seem to have it all figured out when it comes to raising kids and maintaining an A-list career, Landry admits to us it’s not easy.

“I’m still trying to figure that out,” laughed Landry. “I say, you do the best you can. At the end of the day there’s always someone or something that falls short, but tomorrow’s a new day.”

One way Landry stays sane is by making time for herself and planning fun activities with her girlfriends. One of these things is Hollywood Mom’s Night, the TV Guide show Ali and fellow mom Alison Sweeney started last year.

"You need that me time as a woman to get together with your friends and chat — away from the family."

“It’s so much fun,” Landry told SheKnows. “You need that me time as a woman to get together with your friends and chat — away from the family.”

Landry also occupies her free time with workout sessions. Unlike some famous starlets who bounce back almost immediately, Landry admits that dropping weight after her second child has not been easy.

“I was nursing for about nine months and I just weaned him,” said Landry. “During that time I held on to 7 to 20 pounds, so now I’m trying to get the baby weight off.”

She says core exercises and spinning are her favorite activities.

“There’s not much time with two children to work out, so I try to hit a lot of body parts at once,” said Landry. “I need to get in, and get out. You get more bang for your buck.”

Eating well

Ali sticks to a healthy eating plan as well, getting new ideas every day from Pinterest.

“I’m obsessed with Pinterest,” she told SheKnows. “One of my boards is, ‘You are what you eat.’ I love making incredible things with a lot of vegetables, fish and proteins.”

But Ali certainly allows herself some guilty pleasures as well. Her new favorite snack are Hershey’s Simple Pleasures. The chocolates are only 30 calories each and half the fat of regular chocolate.

“I’m very passionate about chocolate,” said Landry. “I eat it every single night before I go bed.”

Seatbelt safety

Ali is also very passionate about helping others. Next month she will work with Safekids.org to raise awareness about seatbelt safety.

“I met a woman whose child was ejected from a car seat,” said Landry. “I thought, that could have been my child. I became a certified car seat technician. It’s been very empowering for me to spread that message.”

It's official: Supermodel Gisele Bundchen and hubby Tom Brady are expecting baby No. 2! The bikini-clad bombshell was recently spotted in Costa Rica sporting a growing baby bump. With another bundle of joy on the way and a 32nd birthday this summer , there is a lot to celebrate!

"I was mindful about what I ate, and I gained only 30 pounds. I did kung fu up until two weeks before Benjamin was born."

A fit pregnancy

No stranger to showing off that incredible bod, the Victoria’s Secret angel sure makes staying in shape look easy. During pregnancy No. 1 , she was still wearing non-maternity clothes in her ninth month! Bundchen told Vogue in 2010, "I was mindful about what I ate, and I gained only 30 pounds. I did kung fu up until two weeks before Benjamin was born, and yoga three days a week."

Why kung fu?

There’s no doubt she’ll continue her dedicated workouts during pregnancy No. 2, so we spoke with her kung fu instructor, Yao Li of the Boston Kung Fu Tai Chi Institute, to get the scoop on her routine.

"Gisele is very focused and very disciplined. I am often surprised by how quickly she grasps the nuances of the movements. When I teach her new techniques, it often seems as though she already knows them," Li says. "She is very intuitive and knows what it takes to make the move look right."

Bundchen, who has worked with Li for the past four years, trains an average of three times per week for 90-minute sessions. The benefits of kung fu — a strong body, a clear mind and a calm spirit, as well as self-defense — are truly inspiring.

"The stance work and kicking techniques improve muscle tone and flexibility in the lower body. Blocking drills and hand techniques do the same for the upper body, especially the shoulders and arms," Li told SHAPE. "Drills that combine hand and foot work require strength and agility in the core muscles and help to increase coordination and balance."

Gisele's workout routine

The dynamic duo begin their workouts by stretching for 10 to 15 minutes, followed by individual kicks and sparring drills. Next, they practice forms . Lastly, they do additional upper-body strength training and abdominal work.

"Learning kung fu is exciting and energizing … you’ve got to feel what it is and if you don’t try it, you won’t know!"

The results

Clearly it’s working for Gisele. "Learning kung fu is exciting and energizing … you’ve got to feel what it is and if you don’t try it, you won’t know!" Li says.

That’s why we were stoked when the kung fu master shared a sample routine from his model client. Read about the full workout on SHAPE.com!

Healthy living in a hectic world

Turns out that yoga does more than enhance flexibility, posture and balance. The meditation aspect also helps keep you calm while sitting in a makeup chair for 15 hours straight. That's what McKenzie Westmore, host of SyFy's Face Off, found out while gearing up for the show's third season.

As the host of the special effects and make-up competition reality show, McKenzie sat through three back-to-back make-up transformations, recorded in time-lapse fashion, that did not allow her to move. At all. "Meditation got me through that for 15 hours straight, with only two 10-minute breaks," Westmore says. "I had to zone out and go to that happy place in my head."

In addition to her Zen-like approach to makeup, Westmore is also known for her 10-year run as Sheridan Crane on NBC's daytime drama Passions, among many other shows and films. As if that weren't enough, she is also a certified personal trainer.

She told SheKnows her tips for staying in shape and eating nutritiously.

SheKnows: What inspired you to become a certified personal trainer?

McKenzie Westmore: I've always had a love for how the body can function at its optimum best through nutrition. During Passions, I got a lot of mail from mothers and girls asking me how to stay in shape. So I started a message blog. But I became concerned [about the information I was giving out] and wanted to be legitimate. So I went to school on the weekends and became certified as a personal trainer — kickboxing, yoga, personal training aerobics as well as nutrition. I have been certified for 10 years now.

SheKnows: How do you make time to exercise?

McKenzie Westmore: When I'm on Face Off I'm there six days a week. My schedule has been a little hectic, especially this last month, so I find time to do small exercises here and there, even [for just] 10 minutes.

SheKnows: How do you eat healthy with such a hectic schedule?

McKenzie Westmore: At the very least I make sure my nutrition is at an optimum level so I'm functioning well and get through my day without having to rely on too much coffee or sugar. I drink lots of green tea, lemon water, lots of good fats and oils and good carbs.

"When you cut everything out so drastically you rebound. You end up eating everything in sight. It defeats the purpose."

SheKnows: Do you plan your meals?

McKenzie Westmore: I never really plan out my day of eating, but I'll have a basic idea of what is nearby or on set that is a good choice. I also balance it out, too. I'll pick one if it's a choice of rice, bread or pasta. I think it's fine to have bread with a little butter. To me, when you cut everything out so drastically you rebound. You end up eating everything in sight. It defeats the purpose. So I look at the options and may choose a piece of fish and rice, and salad with a little bit of real dressing.

SheKnows: Can you give us a sneak peek at what we can expect in this season of Face Off?

McKenzie Westmore: This season opens with Star Wars. The artists will recreate the cantina scene. We also have an episode with 7-year-olds who design monsters and instruct the artists on how they want their monster to look. We end with an amazing finale where the artists have to make up stunt people, and on Halloween night America gets to choose the winner of season three, which is something we've never done before.

SheKnows: Thank you, McKenzie. It sounds like an action-packed season to come!

  1. The pull-up: If you’re not strong enough, have a friend assist you or use a machine with weighted assistance.
  2. The push-up plank: This one is Anne Hathaway’s favorite! It works your chest muscles, shoulders and core all at once.
  3. Single-leg squat with bicep curl: Braganza likes doing compound moves to work multiple muscles at once and get a major calorie burn.

Braganza works in these moves between bouts of cardio and a core cool-down at the end.
